A sunflower, a haiku and a challenge

You and I, haiku
Three Lines capture mind and time

My nose, brain, and heart have been fighting the dreadful low hanging smoke for weeks.  It is forest fire season so clear blue sky has been rare.  The windows are tightly shut because fresh air is only a memory.  Yet, we are far away from the fires - hundreds of kilometres away.  The north westerly winds without sense of time or space, drag the smoke across the earth with such determination we are unable to see the stars at night or the sun by day.  We have had a day or two of reprieve in the last three weeks but not many.

A week ago when I was getting a little desperate for some blue sky, fresh air, and sunshine, a sunflower bloomed in the yard.  Just one.  Close enough I could see it through the haze.  It surprised me which is kind of goofy.  I planted those seeds.  The seeds sprouted.  The sunflower plants grew.  They were about four feet tall and they formed heads. Sun flower heads usually open into sunflowers if they keep growing and developing.  But somehow, in my brain the smoke was preventing them from blooming and I didn't expect to look out one day and see a beautifully formed sunflower.

Oh the tricks our brains play when the smoke gets thick in life.  Sometimes we need a different way of seeing or thinking to shake us out of our stuck place so we notice the sunflowers.  That got me wondering about inviting all of you to write a haiku in response to this blog.  A haiku is three lines.  The first and last lines are five syllables, and the middle line is seven syllables.  Every single one of you can do it and if you take me up on the challenge and submit a haiku, I will put it onto a graphic and post it, crediting you as the author.  I'll start.
